Our partners have tried and true expertise and experience, and we're excited to showcase their services and thought leadership through this series.

Today we're highlighting one of our trusted cannabis cultivation and quality consultants, AgCann Consultancy Ltd.

AgCann specializes in helping cannabis producers achieve their cultivation and postharvest goals, from setting up a tissue culture program to designing a client's drying, trimming, and curing processes. AgCann is dedicated to providing expert advice through its team of experienced plant scientists with hands-on experience in the cannabis industry.

We sat down with Atiyyah Ferouz, CEO and Founder of AgCann, to learn more about the business, her perspectives on the cannabis industry and the biggest challenges facing producers in 2022.

What services does AgCann offer?

"AgCann is an international cannabis consulting agency. Our team provides cannabis producers with assistance in the areas of Cultivation, Postharvest Processing, Tissue Culture, and Quality Assurance. We offer tailored solutions for each client to optimize their processes, assisting them through startup or transitions when scaling production."

What type of businesses do you typically work with?

"We work with cannabis producers globally that are licensed for either medical or recreational production. We assist cannabis cultivators and processors interested in improving their operations and those seeking guidance on how to get started. Our clients vary in size, location, and scope, but they all have product quality as a main pillar of their business."

What are the biggest challenges and opportunities facing cannabis producers in 2022?

"One of the biggest challenges facing cannabis producers is oversupply in many of the currently legalized markets. This has driven finished product prices down, and many producers are struggling to stay competitive while covering their cost of production."

"As new markets open up, we expect to see a shift towards a more global cannabis supply chain, which should help alleviate some of the pressure in existing markets. However, many of the new markets require that producers of cannabis products have a GMP or EU-GMP certification, which is one of the areas that our team has been increasingly receiving requests for assistance with."

"Another challenge facing many producers is the push for higher potency cultivars. Although we are seeing slight shifts in more mature markets, there is still an overwhelming demand for products with THC levels above 20%. Products that don't meet this arbitrary threshold are typically sold at a lower price, creating additional strain on the producers. We help producers source proven high potency genetics or run internal phenotyping programs to help them achieve these potency targets."

How did you first get into the cannabis industry?

"I transitioned into the cannabis industry upon legalization in Canada. I previously worked in the dairy industry, where I gained most of my commercial manufacturing and quality assurance experience. When I heard that there were opportunities in the cannabis space, I thought it would be a good chance to utilize my Master's in Genetic Engineering. Luckily my education and work experience have both been very applicable to my work in cannabis."

What is your favourite thing about working in cannabis?

"My favourite thing about working in cannabis is how fast-paced this industry is. The expression "building the plane while you're flying it" is used a lot to describe what it's like working at a cannabis producer, and it is completely accurate. There are hiccups and hurdles almost every step of the way, and this industry demands a certain level of malleability, problem-solving skills, and moxie. Although this may not sound like a dream industry for some, I feel right at home."
